Sparc and Sciences Commons offer authors a new tool to create an additional clause to the publisher's contract, regarding their rights.

Other solutions exist, such as the "Licence to Publish" devised by the JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) and the SURF Foundation, or the additional clause put forward by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) and in use amongst American universities.
